How Prepared Are You for the Fellowship Exam? Tips for Better Test Taking
Preparing to take an exam can be stressful for anyone. Addressing this stress in a positive manner can help to make your testing taking experience a productive one. Here are some tips to better prepare you to take the Fellowship Exam:
Before the exam:
- Arrive Early for the Test
Bring all of the materials that you will need such as pencils, erasers, and a watch.
Choose a good spot and make sure you have enough room to work. Wear comfortable, loose fitting clothes, but bring a sweater in case the room is too cold.
- Finish Your Studying the Day Before the Exam
Cramming the day of an exam helps to promote anxiety and reduces your concentration.
If you find yourself anxious, take several slow, deep breaths.
Decide to do your best. Remind yourself that you are well-prepared.
- Avoid Worried Test Takers
Extreme nervousness is called test anxiety and is exhibited in some test takers. Test anxiety is contagious as well as unproductive, so try and avoid those who are extremely nervous before the exam begins.
During the exam:
- Read the Directions Carefully
Be sure you understand the directions before you begin the exam. If you do not understand something, ask a question before the exam begins to avoid losing valuable testing time.
- Do Not Linger Too Long on Any One Question
Valuable testing time is quickly diminished if you spend too much time on one question. If you are unsure of the answer, move on to the next question and return to the problematic question at the end of the exam.
- Don’t Keep Changing Your Answers
Usually your first answer is the correct choice, unless you misread the question. Always reread questions to be sure that you understood them and then verify your answer.
- Resist the Urge to Leave as Soon as You Have Completed all the Items
Review your test to make sure that you have answered all the questions and have marked the answer sheet correctly.
- Be Alert for Grammatical Inconsistencies Between the Questions Stem and the Answer Choices on Multiple-Choice Questions
An answer choice is almost always wrong if it and the stem do not make a grammatically correct sentence.
- Know If You are Penalized for Guessing
If the instructions state that you will not be penalized for guessing, always take an educated guess and select an answer.
